school league tables

school league tables
Introduced in 1992, performance tables show the examination results and basic statistics of schools in England and Wales, with primary schools included in 1997. Part of the Citizen’s Charter, they are designed to inform the public and act as an incentive to increase national standards to meet government targets and to be used in conduction with prospectuses, governors’ reports and inspection reports. Criticism has decreased since their introduction, but many argue that the data is misleading, placing too much emphasis on exam results and not enough on the all-round education a school provides in terms of extra-curricular activities and moral education. Although available elsewhere, important details such as quality of intake and socioeconomic conditions are not shown in the league tables.
